- Mineral oil: Mineral oil is a popular and inexpensive base that’s derived from petroleum. It forms a coating that clogs pores and dissolves your skin’s natural oils. With regular use, it makes your skin chapped, hard and dry.
- Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA): these are commonly used as emulsifiers and foaming agents. DEA and TEA can irritate the eyes and dry out skin and hair. When exposed to the air they form “nitrosoamines,” which are toxic to the cardiovascular system, lungs and digestive tract.
- Methylparaben, Propylparaben: Parabens are popular additives because they dramatically extend shelf life. But they are very dangerous substances because they mimic the effects of estrogen and cause long-term damage to cells. They have also been shown in studies to release potentially cancer-causing chemicals. If it says “paraben” on the label, avoid it.
- Diazolidinyl Urea: A preservative to help prevent bacterial growth, it can trigger contact dermatitis. It may also release formaldehyde, a potentially toxic chemical.
- Red 3, Yellow 5 (Ci 19140): Whether synthetic colors are completely safe or mildly damaging in the long run is unknown. Since they serve no useful purpose, they are best avoided.
