How to treat acne and hide it at the same time

While some people were lucky enough to leave acne behind in high school, others continue to fight it into adulthood. They often try to cover up breakouts with makeup, but sometimes that can just make the problem worse. It can clog pores further or draw attention to exactly what they want to hide. Fortunately, there are products out there that can help you both cover up blemished skin effectively and keep breakouts from coming back. You just have to know what to look for.

First, look for makeup that has acne-fighting ingredients included in the product formula. Salicylic acid is one of the most popular and effective blemish controllers commercially available today, and more and more cosmetic companies are wising up and adding it to their products. Look for non-comedogenic, oil-free options, particularly if your skin tends to get greasy easily. Tea tree oil, zinc, niacinamide, and willow and aspen bark also are good at fighting back against acne and can be found in some powder and liquid foundations.

Second, before you apply your foundation, start with a primer made specifically for people who struggle with acne. This will help smooth out your complexion and shield your pores from getting clogged. Primer waters are also a good option if you want something lighter. If you prefer, you can then top it with tinted moisturizer rather than regular foundation. This will give you some coverage and color without getting cakey and drawing more attention to blemishes.

Of course, we all know that concealer is the best friend of the acne-prone. And a truly great concealer won't just cover up blemishes; it will actually provide targeted ingredients to diminish the blemish as it's hiding it. Aspen bark and tee tree oil can be effective in concealers too, and I particularly like ones with kaolin clay. This ingredient provides good coverage while drawing out and gently drying the oil that can create acne in the first place.

Some of my favorite, easily found cosmetics for people with acne-prone skin come from Clinique and Bare Minerals. Clinique's products in particular seem to agree with most people. For a drugstore bargain, try Neutrogena's SkinClearing liquid foundation or e.l.f. Acne Fighting Foundation. Both of these contain salicylic acid. If you're willing to spend more, I also like Diorskin Forever Perfect makeup.

We spend a lot of time getting our makeup right, so it seems only fitting that it should help enhance rather than hurt our skin. Now that you know what to look for, you can use products that work for you rather than against you.

To your health, naturally,
