The right way to wash your face

Years ago, before I knew much about skin health and maintenance, I typically washed my face with a rough, wet washcloth. When a dermatologist friend of mine witnessed this, she shrieked, "What are you doing? Do you do this every day?" When I told her I did, she told me that I was going to hurt my skin eventually and pointed to a few broken capillaries which she explained were the result of my harsh washcloth technique.

The skin on your face is delicate, so it's important to use proper care in how you cleanse it. Fortunately, following some simple techniques and using the right products can make a big difference in your skin's appearance.

You shouldn't scrub your face or use anything harsh — you'll just irritate your skin, which makes it look worse. Instead, follow these suggestions to keep your skin at its best.

First, use a gentle, nonabrasive cleanser formulated without alcohol. We have a cleanser that's very effective yet still gentle. Just use lukewarm water and your fingertips to apply it. You don't need to scrub your skin with a washcloth or sponge. Your fingertips will do the work without irritating your skin.

Once you've applied the cleanser, simply rinse it off with more lukewarm water. Then pat your skin dry using a soft towel — don't rub! Follow with moisturizer, particularly if your skin is dry or itchy, but be careful. Don't pull or tug on your skin, especially around your eyes. This area is very delicate, so use a light touch to apply products.

It's important to have a skincare routine, but you don't need to wash your face more than twice a day, unless you've been sweating. Sweat does irritate skin, so remove it as soon as you're able. But if you don't sweat during the day, washing once in the morning and once at night is all you need. It sounds too simple to work. But it does.
