Myotonic Dystrophy Can Lead to Abnormal Skin Spots

Researchers found that myotonic dystrophy (muscular dystrophy) participants were more likely to have abnormal spots on their skin and signs of early aging, including dysplastic nevi, alopecia, xerosis, and seborrheic dermatitis. None of the abnormal spots showed signs of melanoma. There also was an inverse relationship between the dysplastic nevi and xerosis and the participants’ vitamin D levels.

The U.S. government has assessed only 11% of the over 10,000 ingredients used in personal care products to ensure that they’re safe. It’s banned only 10 ingredients from cosmetics. The EU, on the other hand, has banned over 1,110 ingredients. This lack of regulation could be why one-third of the personal care products sold in the U.S. contain at least one chemical that’s linked to cancer.

Clear Link Between Sleep Deprivation and Skin Aging

Researchers evaluated the skin and the sleep habits of 60 premenopausal women between the ages of 30 and 49. Half of them suffered from poor quality sleep. The researchers evaluated the participants’ skin using the SCINEXA skin aging system and found that the women who had poor sleep had older-looking skin, evidenced by fine lines, uneven pigmentation, looser skin, and a reduction in skin elasticity. The higher the SCINEXA score, the more aged the skin appears.
